Friday 7 March 2014 German town synagogue

On Friday night, we drove into Germantown to walk around.

Pedestrian walking/biking path in Germantown.

We noticed a lot of Jews going into a synagogue.  We asked a passerby if we could go in, and explained we are not Jewish.  He said we could, but if we wanted to have a better time we should go with him and his two friends to his synagogue where they sing and dance.

He and his friends are from Holland. His friends are not Jewish. He lives in Switzerland and was sent to Israel to study to become a rabbi.  He will return to his community in Switzerland to be their rabbi in a couple of years. We walked with them to his synagogue.

Men and women were separated by a curtain, but they all followed the leader in singing and dancing. Linda sat with the women and I stood outside an open window to watch the men.  I didn't have a head covering so I stayed outside. He said I could go in, but I didn't want to be disrespectful.

They sang and danced and had a great time.  It was crowded inside, so other worshippers stood with me outside the windows. Some younger boys were playing soccer on the patio outside.
