Monday 16 December 2014 Hanukah candle lighting on Chadwick's balcony

Monday, December 16, was the first day of Hanukkah or Festival of the Lights. We celebrated it on Chadwicks' balcony with students and faculty - Vicki Iba and Michelle Higashi

Jeff Chadwick is the Ancient Near Eastern History professor and taught us the history and symbolism of Hanukkah on his patio.

The first night the middle candle, or the Shamash, is lit and the far right candle.  Each night another candle is added to the lit candles progressing from Right to Left.

The dreidel is a top/game that the children play.

Foods that are fried in oil such as donuts represent the oil used in the lamps.

Gelt is the money that is given as a gift during Hanukkah.

Jeff lead us in singing some Hanukkah songs.
