Monday 23 February 2015 Bethany and Bethlehem with Smiths

A driver took us into Bethany and Bethlehem for the Smiths to meet our contacts there.  Our first stop was at Four Homes of Mercy, a facility for people with disabilities. Usama with some of the caregivers.

BYU purchased new beds for the patients.

Joyce and Jeff Smith, Usama, one of their contributors from the US and Linda.
Then we went to Peace Center for Heritage to see Sasan Khatib.  She has a craft store where she sells the Bedouin women's embroidery and jewelry.

Our last visit in Bethany was to Sirouq Women's Society.  Fatima is the director (left).
After Bethany our driver took us the back way to Bethlehem.  On the way there, we saw a bunch of police cars and cameras.  We looked closer and saw bull dozers demolishing someone's  property. It  is used as a form of punishment. We asked our driver if we could turn around and get a picture but he kept going, which was probably good.

We then went into Bethlehem to Effetta School for the Deaf.  They teach lip reading beginning at about 2 years of age.  The students were bright and attentive. The lady in the purple is
Doris Scaffey and the nun is Sister Piera.

The school is in downtown Bethlehem.

We then went to the Arab Sports Club in Beit Jala which is just outside of Bethlehem. Khader gave us a plaque of the Lords Prayer as a token of appreciation.

Khader then took us to Hope School which looks out into Bethlehem.

The school raises chickens to produce eggs.  This provides income that helps support the Hope School.

The chicken coops are behind the school.

This is the back side of the Hope School.  It was very run down until a couple of years ago when Khader became involved with its improvement.

We met in the office for a final farewell with a teacher, Blaine, Linda, Khader, Joyce, and Jeff Smith.
