Monday 26 May 2014 Jericho Field Trip

On our way to Jericho, we stopped at a monastery that is built into the side of a wall at the bottom of the Judean Desert.  It is called St. George monastery.

This is a view from the Judean dessert into Jerusalem.

The Judean dessert is very dry with very little vegetation.

This is a close up of the St. George Monastery.

The students learn about St. George monastery.

Bedouin camps are all along the road to Jericho.

There are ravines of vegetation where the water runs.

Jericho is the oldest city in the world with 17 layers of civilization.  Joshua attacked this city and "the walls came tumbling down".  There is a spring in the center of the city that provides the water for the city.  It's called Elisha Spring.
In the spring the flowers are gorgeous.  In the summer the temperature gets in the 100's.

The mounds are tels where other civilizations are buried.

The City of Jericho is one of my favorite places. I loved the drive between Jerusalem and Jericho.  We home taught Maher in Jericho so drove their often.

Jericho is a little oasis in the middle of the dessert.   It was along the road to Jericho that the good Samaritan stopped to help a stranger.

This shows the different levels of civilization.

More examples of past civilizations.
